Looking To Jesus the founder and perfecter of our faith

 

Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV)

 

(1) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, (2) looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

 

If we are to endure to the end, we too must be looking to the unseen Christ.

 

Hebrews 11:1 (ESV) , Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

 

1.  Every Christian Must Run in the Race (Hebrews 12:1). Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

 

Claud of witness are those Old Testament saints have finished their race.  Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and many others have already finished the race. They saw the finish line at death and crossed it in faith.  Multitudes have been a part of the same race.  They also crossed the finish line.  Now, it’s our turn as a Gideon.

 

Imagine for a moment that you are in a stadium and running 100-meter race and this above group is like a roaring crowd and they not only left us their example but are literally cheering for us sitting in the stadium as we run.  The sound is deafening (roaring)  as each believer today finishes the race.

 

 

1 A. Let Us Lay Aside Every Weight and Sin : The Christian life is an endurance race. Runners wear light clothing and light shoes.  A marathon runner would be foolish to drag behind him a fifty kilo weight while he ran.  It would slow him down tremendously and wear him out prematurely and the runner may not even finish the race.

 

The apostle compares this weight to sin.In the same way that dragging a weight behind us while running slows us down so sin keeps us from performing as we should.  His advice, cut loose.

 

1 B. Let Us Run the Race with Endurance: We are to run the race and set aside sin.  Also in this first verse, he tells us to run with endurance the race that is set before us,

 

In other words just like Moses had a race to run and Joseph had his race we too have ours.  Ours isn’t a race that is like anyone else’s.  Our race as with everyone else’s is a unique race.  Everyone’s life is different.  Our sovereign Lord has place each of us on a different course.  My race will not be like yours.  Some of the things I struggle with along the way may not be your struggles.  However the finish line and the strategy are the same.

 

Lay aside sin and look to the finish line.

 

Philip. 3:12-14 (ESV) Paul’s strategy was much the same. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.  [13] Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,  [14] I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

 

Paul also shows us how to cut loose the sin that entangles us and weighs us down. By faith we are to realize we are dead to sin.

 

Romans 6:11 and 14 (ESV) :   [11] So you also must consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.  [14] For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

 

Many seek to look like athletes by imposing religion on themselves.  Some seek to look athletic by false humility or piousness.  However these self efforts are of no value when seeking to lay aside sin.

 

Exercising faith in Christ is the only way.Letting go of the weight of sin is easier if we love Christ more than we love sin. We can cut this stuff loose when we grab a hold on Jesus.

 

2.  Every Christian must Look to Christ (Hebrews 12:2-3 :if we read) founder and perfecter of our faith, endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

 

Runners are always challenged to not look back or behind them if they begin to hear footsteps.  This looking back often costs them a stride.  In a footrace one stride can be the difference in winning and loosing.

 

The apostle tells us to keep our eyes and concentration on Jesus.  If we are to look to Christ, we must look away from other things.  Taking our eyes off of Jesus is the same as looking back.

 

2 A.  Look to Christ as Others Have :-

 

We have learned through many examples in Chapter 11 how others looked to Christ. 

We should see Abel’s commitment to offer a blood sacrifice,

Noah’s example of perseverance as he looked to and trust God. 

Abraham believed God and he was counted with Christ’s righteousness.  Moses saw the One who is invisible and his life immediately was altered.

 

Once these saints by faith saw Christ, they never looked back.  That’s a good example for us.  Fix your eyes on Christ like the Old Testament saints did and never look away.

 

2 B.  Look to Christ the Author and Perfector of Our Faith

 

We are to look to Jesus by faith because our faith came from Him.

It originates with Jesus. 

Here’s a key if we are to run the Christian race with endurance.

we not only receive faith initially from Christ, but we receive faith daily from Christ. 

He is the founder and perfecter of our faith. 

Faith was originally created by Christ and distributed to His people. 

He then is working with us to perfect that faith. 

We should look to Him for faith and look to Him daily to have our faith perfected.

 

How is our faith perfected? 

Jesus works with us through the Holy Spirit. 

As we run the race of the Christian life, the Spirit of Christ supplies the necessary help to run and help to finish.

 

How do we access this spiritual strength?    Not by focusing on the Holy Spirit but by focusing on Christ the One He glorifies.

 

 

2 C.  Look to Christ and Imitate His Example of Endurance:- Who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

 

 

We look to Christ as the saints of old did. 

We look to Christ because He is the supplier of everything we need to run the race. 

Finally, we look to Christ because in Him we find a clear example to imitate.

 

He shows us how to endure hardship. 

When we enter into a difficult situation, don’t ever think the rest of your life will be as hard as the situation that you find to be difficult. 

By faith look to the promises of God.  Look past the challenge and see Christ seated on the throne. 

Look past the hardship a see the kingdom of God. 

 

Remember, we’re only on this earth for a while we must get ready for heaven.

 

Jesus looked forward and never looked back as His race led Him to the cross. 

Sometimes as we run the race we are led to places of struggle. 

We can always remember there is a Savior named Jesus Christ who endured more pain and heartache than we ever will. 

He kept running and finished His course. 

We too must endure as we run the race set before us. 

Look to Jesus and look away from all other things, and run. 

 

Run hard and run long listening to the cloud of witnesses cheering and seeing Christ as the finish line.

 

We are Gideon not by chance but by the will of God so let lus ook to the Christ the founder and perfector of our faith and RUN

Jesus said on the Cross "It is finished"

 

Jesus said It Is Finished

(Gospel John Chapter 19:28-30)

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.  So, when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

 

The above verse says Jesus knowing that all things are now accomplished that the Scripture might be fulfilled. Now the question arises why Jesus came to this fallen world, what was His purpose and meaning of last words uttered “It is finished”. There is a very high price paid and work finished Let us look through the scripture for some of the same.

 

1.    Jesus was Propitiation and ransom for us:

 

Propitiation

a)   Romans 3:25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed.

 

b)   Hebrew 2:17, Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

 

c)   1 John 2:2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

 

Ransome:

 

d)   1 timothy 2:6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

2.Jesus redeemed us from the Sins as well as consequences of the Sins also:

   a)  Galatians 4:5, To redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

 

3.Jesus reconciled us with heavenly father:

 

Ephesians: 2:14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,

 

Colossians 1:20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

 

Romans 5:10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

 

2 Corinthians 5:19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

 

Roman 11:15 For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?

 

3.Reconcilation with God.

     1. Eph.2:16 “and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity”.

 

2.    Colo. 1:20 “and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross”.

3.      Romans 5:10 -11 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

4.      2 Corinthian 5 :19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not [a]imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

 

Hence Jesus came to this world for the propitiation/ransom, for redeeming us from not only from our sins but its consequences also as well as reconciling us with heavenly father. This all is just the grace of God alone and we have no done anything for this. Let is believe.

 

If we went to overcome the sin and satan in our life we must go the Father trusting on the first and finished work of the Lord as mentioned above and stand under His grace keeping in our mind what he has done for us. We must remind the satan by proclaiming the work Lord has done for us on the cross. We have not to during prayer but constantly remain under His grace keeping in mind the above. God would really Listen to your prayers.

Who is Prophet ?

 A prophet is a spokesman for God, one who relates the message of God to the people. They were usually unpopular among their people. The Old Testament tells us of many prophets that God raised up. They include as Elijah, Jeremiah and Isaiah. The Old Testament however predicted that God would raise up one special Prophet who would be like Moses. Moses wrote

The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brothers, him you shall hear . . The Lord said to me, 'They have spoken well. I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. It shall come about that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him' (Deuteronomy 18:15, 17-19).

But at the time of Moses' death this particular Prophet had not yet appeared:

But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face (Deuteronomy 34:10).

That Particular Prophet Never Appeared

Furthermore, the Old Testament does not record that this particular prophet ever appeared.

At the time of Jesus' coming, the people were still looking for "the Prophet." The religious leaders asked John the Baptist

Are you the Prophet? (John 1:21).

John said that he was not. When Jesus appeared on the scene and started performing His miracles He was recognized by many as the long-awaited prophet who is to come into the world.

Therefore when the people saw the sign which he had performed, they said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world" (John 6:14).

Jesus' Testimony That He Was "The" Prophet

Jesus Himself testified that He was that prophet - the One who spoke the words from God the Father.

So Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me"(John 7:16).

Jesus predicted the people would know He came from the Father.

So Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught me (John 8:28).

Jesus also said.

For I did not speak on my own initiative, but the Father himself who sent me has given me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me (John 12:49-50).

Jesus again testified He was speaking the Father's words.

He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me (John 14:24).

The Testimony Of His Disciples

After the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus His disciples made it clear that Jesus was that Prophet like unto Moses:

For Moses truly said to the fathers, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brothers. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you. And it shall come to pass that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people' (Acts 3:22,23).

The Bible says.

No one has ever seen God, but God the one and only who is at the Father's side, has made him known (John 1:18).

Summary

The Old Testament predicted that God would raise up a prophet like Moses who spoke with God face to face. It is the claim of the New Testament that Jesus was "the Prophet" predicted in the Old Testament who would be like Moses, dealing with God on a face-to-face basis. But Jesus was greater than Moses for He was the one and only God who had eternally been face-to-face with the Father.

What are the hindrances to intimacy with God?

There are various things in our life that can hinder our relationship and intimacy with God. Let us see in the Bible and know them to have intimate walk with God.

1. UNCONFESSED SIN: “If I regard wickedness in my heart, the Lord will not hear.”  Psalm 66:18

 2. LACK OF FAITH: “But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord.”  James 1:6-7 “Without faith it is impossible to please the Lord.”  Hebrews 11:6

3. WILLFUL DISOBEDIENCE: “Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from Him anything we ask, because we obey His commands and do what pleases Him.”  1 John 3:21-23

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”   John 14:15 “He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.”   2 Corinthians 5:15

 4. LACK OF TRANSPARENCY WITH GOD & OTHERS: “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”   James 5:16

 5. UNFORGIVENESS: “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your father will not forgive your sins.”  Matthew 6:14-15 “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”  Ephesians 4:32

 6. WRONG / SELFISH MOTIVES: “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”   James 4:3 

7.IDOLS IN LIVES: “Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all?”   Ezekiel 14:3 “I thought you would call me Father, and not turn away from following me. But like a woman unfaithful to her husband, so you have been unfaithful to me.”  Jeremiah 3:20

 8. DISREGARD FOR OTHERS: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”   John 13:34-35

 9. DISREGARD FOR GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY: “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. ‘Your kingdom comes. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  Matthew 6:9-10

 10. UNSURRENDERED WILL/ REBELLION: “For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.”   1 Samuel 15:23 “Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.”   Isaiah1:5 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”   Luke 6:46

 11. LUST: “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”   Matthew 5:28

 12. COMPLAINING: “Do all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world.”   Philippians 2:14-15 

 13. IMPATIENCE WITH OTHERS: “Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”   Ephesians 4:32” And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with everyone.”   1 Thessalonians 5:14

 14. STRIFE: Colossians 3:9, “Do all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world.” Philippians 2:14-15

 15. PRAYERLESSNESS: “You do not have because you do not ask.”   James 4:2 

 16. BITTERNESS: “See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many defiled.”   Hebrews 12:15 “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.”  Ephesians 4:31

 17. NOT THANKFUL / NOT GRATEFUL: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I will say, rejoice!”   Philippians 4:4 “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”   1 Thessalonians 5:18

18. LYING:” The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”   Proverbs 12:22 “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”   Colossians 3:9-10

 19. UNRESOLVED CONFLICTS: “Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.”   Matthew 5:23-24

Thankfully God has given us instructions and guidance in the Bible on the hindrances to intimacy with God, and how to have close fellowship with Him. God has also given us a way to reconnect with Him and re-establish our intimate fellowship with God. It is called confession. If there are sinful things in our lives that are hindrances to our intimacy with God, we can humbly go to God and confess our sins and receive forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  1 John 1:9.

Matthew 7:21-23 is one of the most alarming passages in the Bible. It warns that not everyone who claims Jesus as their Lord is sincerely saved. This means that many think they know Christ, but will come to find out that they never truly knew Him in a saving way.

The false-conversion idea is echoed in the Parable of the Sower of Mark 4:1-20. There are four types of soils found in this Parable: one that flat-out rejects Christianity, two that seem to be interested in Christianity but do not prove genuine (they are distracted by the cares of the world or disinterested after hardship), and one “good” soil that truly believes and bears fruit for Christ. Just like the fruitless seed that fell upon rocky and thorny ground, there are Christians who hear the Word of God and attend church regularly who do not show the signs of being saved and are not genuinely converted.

How do we know if we are planted in the good soil? The twelve tests below shared in will help you understand more clearly what a true Christian look like according to 1 John.

My goal of this post is not to cause any soundly-saved believer to doubt their salvation–this list should greatly assure you. Rather I want to hold up God’s Word as a mirror for self-examination. None of us are described perfectly below, but the list should confirm many ways God is working in our hearts as believers and bring a sweet assurance of salvation. If looking at this list makes you question if you are a genuine believer, I urge you to get on your knees before God and humbly ask Him to save you and regenerate you by the Spirit.

I invite you to join me in making each of these truths your prayer as you grow more into the image of Christ.

12 Characteristics of a True Christian:

Test 1: We know that we are Christian because we walk in the light (1 John 1:4-7). Our style of life is gradually conformed to what God has revealed to us about His nature and will.

Test 2: We know that we are Christian because our lives are marked by sensitivity to sin, repentance, and confession (1 John 1:8-10).

Test 3: We know that we are Christian because we keep God’s commands (1 John 2:3-4). We desire to know God’s will, strive to obey it, and mourn our disobedience.

Test 4: We know that we are Christian because we walk as Christ walked (1 John 2:4-5. We desire to imitate Christ and grow in conformity to Him.

Test 5: We know that we are Christian because we love other Christians, desire their fellowship, and seek to serve them in deed and truth (1 John 2:7-11.

Test 6: We know that we are Christian because of our increasing disdain for the world and because of our rejection of all that contradicts and opposes God’s nature and will (1 John 2:15-17.

Test 7: We know that we are Christian because we continue in the historic doctrines and practices of the Christian faith and remain within the fellowship of others who do the same (1 John 2:18-19).

Test 8: We know that we are Christian because we profess Christ to be God and hold Him in the highest esteem (1 John 2:22-24; 4:1-3, 13-15).

Test 9: We know that we are Christian because our lives are marked by a longing and practical pursuit of holiness (1 John 3:1-3).

Test 10: We know that we are Christian because we are practicing righteousness (1 John 2:28-29; 3:4-10). We are doing those things that conform to God’s righteous standard.

Test 11: We know that we are Christian because we have overcome the world (1 John 4:4-6; 5:4-5). Although we are often hard pressed and weary, we press on in faith. We continue following Christ and do not turn back.

Test 12: We know that we are Christian because we believe the things that God has revealed concerning His Son, Jesus Christ. We have eternal life in Him alone (1 John 5:9-12).

If we have these qualities, and they are increasing in us, we have evidence that we have come to know God and bear the fruit of a child of God.

However, if these qualities are absent from our lives, we should have the greatest concern for our souls.

We should be diligent to seek God regarding our salvation and we should re-examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith. We should be diligent to make our calling and election sure (2 Corinthians 13:5; 2 Peter 1:8-11).

 LIFE ON EARTH IS like vapor and many ARE DOING SO MANY THINGS THAT they have to live here only for eternity

Life on earth is Like a Vapor: -

Our life, when compared to eternity, is like a morning fog, which quickly burns off in the heat of the day. Or as James wrote, it’s only a vapor that appears for a little while and is gone for good (James 4:14).

The things of this world may be very appealing as the fruit was in Eden Garden for the Eve. We are always enticed by the power of darkness to think like its thinking and enjoy whatever is appealing to our eyes or mind. These powers know their fate and they want as many as to take with them so that the Lord is defamed.  God has given human being a free will and it is human being who can chose to either love the Lord or things which appealing to eyes and mind. We are not supposed to learn from the world or people of this world but from the  word of God given to us in the Bible. We are not only to learn but also  put into practice the same in our life because whatever is in our mind will further reflect in our nature / behavior and will create character in us accordingly.

The average life span has increased over the last century, but even so, when we look at our life compared to eternity, it seems less than nothing. So, what impact can we have while here on earth that can have eternal implications? For one thing, the message of the Gospel promises eternal life for all who believe in Christ (John 3:16). Is there anything in this life that compares with the message of eternal hope that is found only in Christ (Acts 4:12)?

Wasting Time on the Temporal: -

I have to plead guilty to wasting a lot of my earthy time on things that would not have an impact on eternity. At my age (60+), I might not have too many years left. Why would I be so frivolous with my time when there are things that are much more important? I need to learn the value of each and every day and make every one of them count (Psalm 90:12) because life is so fleeting (Psalm 39:4).

I can watch TV, surf the Internet, social sites or any number of other things to entertain myself, but when I look back at my life when in heaven, I can surely count the days and hours that were a complete waste of time. Do not get me wrong; there is a time to rest and relax because even Jesus took time to get away and rest (Mark 6:31), but I can overdo that, too. One man asked D. L. Moody after another long, grueling day if he was tired of the work. D. L. Moody said, I am tired in the work but not tired of the work. He was a tireless worker for the kingdom, and much of what he did will impact all eternity. In the wake of his life, he left a great church (Moody Church) and college (Moody Bible College and Moody Theological Seminary). How’s that for making the most of his time?

Forsaking Much for Eternal Rewards:-

Jesus once said that even a cup of water given in His name will not go unrewarded (Matt. 10:42). When Peter said that he and the disciples had left everything to follow Jesus (Matt. 19:27), he reminded them all that the disciples who forsook all they had would sit with Christ on 12 thrones in the kingdom and be judges of the 12 tribes of Israel (Matt. 19:28). How is that for making an impact on eternity? For the disciples, that impact will be great because Jesus reminded them, and, really, He reminds us that everyone–I shall say that again–everyone who has left mother, brothers, sisters, fathers, and children for His sake will receive a hundredfold in the next but also eternal life (Matt. 19:29). How is that for a return on our investment? Did not the disciples leave everything for Jesus?
