“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27
John 10:27 reveals the personal, intimate, and permanent relationship
that exists between Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, and those who belong to
Him. Jesus does not describe His followers merely as people who know about
Him; He calls them “My sheep.” This speaks of belonging, relationship,
protection, guidance, and trust.
1. “My sheep hear My voice” — A
Relationship of Recognition
The first characteristic of Christ's sheep is that they hear His voice.
Jesus is not primarily speaking about hearing an audible voice. He is
speaking about recognizing, understanding, receiving, and responding to His
revealed will. His voice is known through Scripture, the Holy Spirit, godly
wisdom, and His character and teachings.
“If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.” — John 8:31
A true disciple learns to distinguish the voice of the Shepherd from the
competing voices of the world, the flesh, false teaching, fear, and deception.
Hearing Jesus means more than receiving information—it means recognizing
His authority.
2. “And I know them” — A Relationship
of Intimacy
Jesus says, “I know them.”
This is remarkably personal. Christianity is not merely about knowing
religious facts; it is about being known by Christ.
Jesus knows our struggles, failures, fears, weaknesses, desires, and
circumstances. Yet He still calls us His sheep.
“I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” — John
10:14
There is comfort in knowing that we are not anonymous before God. The
Shepherd knows every sheep personally.
3. “And they follow Me” — A
Relationship of Obedience
The evidence that someone truly hears the Shepherd is that they follow
Him.
Hearing without following is not genuine discipleship.
Jesus said:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15
Following Christ means allowing Him to determine the direction of our
lives. We follow Him when His Word contradicts our desires. We follow Him when
obedience is difficult. We follow Him when the world goes in another direction.
The sheep do not merely admire the Shepherd—they follow Him.
4. The Shepherd's Voice Brings
Direction
Sheep can easily become confused and wander. That is why they need the
shepherd.
Likewise, believers need Christ's guidance every day.
When you don't know which way to go, listen to the Shepherd.
When you face temptation, listen to the Shepherd.
When you are afraid, listen to the Shepherd.
When the world is shouting conflicting messages, listen to the Shepherd.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm
119:105
God's Word gives us direction when our own understanding is insufficient.
5. We Must Learn to Distinguish His
Voice
Not every voice that speaks into our minds deserves our attention.
There is the voice of God, the voice of Scripture, the
voice of wisdom, but there can also be voices of fear, temptation,
deception, worldly pressure, and our own desires.
Therefore, every claimed spiritual message must be tested against God's
Word.
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are
of God.” — 1 John 4:1
The Holy Spirit will never lead us into something that contradicts the
inspired Word of God.
God's voice will never disagree with God's Word.
6. Hearing Produces Obedience
James gives us an important warning:
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.” — James 1:22
There is a difference between hearing the Word and obeying the
Word.
A person can listen to sermons every Sunday, read the Bible every day,
and still fail to follow Christ.
The goal is not merely:
“Did I hear God's Word?”
The deeper question is:
“Did I obey what God showed me?”
7. The Shepherd's Voice Leads to
Security
The context of John 10 is especially powerful. Immediately after verse
27, Jesus says:
“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither
shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” — John 10:28
Notice the progression:
They hear → He knows → They follow → He gives eternal life → He keeps
them.
This is the beautiful security of belonging to Christ.
The Christian life is not simply about trying to find God. It is about
belonging to the Shepherd who has found us, knows us, leads us, and keeps us.
A Powerful Personal Application
Ask yourself today:
- Am I really listening to Jesus?
- Do I recognize His voice through
His Word?
- Am I obeying what He has already
revealed?
- Am I following Jesus, or merely
following religious traditions?
- Can my daily decisions be brought
under the authority of His Word?
The greatest evidence that we belong to the Shepherd is not merely that
we say we know Him, but that we hear His voice and follow Him.
Conclusion
John 10:27 gives us a beautiful picture of Christian discipleship:
His sheep hear His voice.
His sheep are known by Him.
His sheep follow Him.
His sheep receive eternal life.
His sheep are held securely in His hand.
The question is not simply, “Is Jesus speaking?”
The question is:
“Am I listening?”
And after hearing Him:
“Am I following?”
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” — John
10:27
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are my Good Shepherd. Teach me to recognize Your voice
through Your Word and the leading of Your Holy Spirit. Give me discernment to
reject every voice that contradicts Your truth. Help me not only to hear You
but to obey You and follow You faithfully every day. Keep me close to You and
lead me in the path of eternal life. Amen.
